Examine Yourselves

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. But I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified. (2 Corinthians 13:5-6 NKJV)

Thirty-three years ago, I was tested by three different professors at the school of medicine I was attending in Germany and I had to pass the test to be qualified as a medical doctor. Testing others is much easier than testing ourselves. When we test ourselves, we have to use the same standard we use to test others. Will we be biased when testing ourselves? Today, the Word of God reminds us to examine or to test ourselves as to whether we are in the faith.

It is very crucial to ask ourselves the following questions:

  1. Who is Jesus Christ in our lives? Is He the Lord?
  2. Is our life centered in Christ?
  3. Is Christ in us? Are we abiding in Him and He in us?
  4. Are we bearing fruit because of who He is in our lives?
  5. Is our hearts attached to Him? And do we have the longing to always be in His presence?

Why did Paul urge every believer to examine himself? Could it be that there are some who profess that they are Christians when they are not? Could it be that there are some who genuinely believe that they are Christians because they go to Church, tithe, get involved in ministry when they do not have Jesus Christ in their lives? Examine ourselves in this context does not mean that we fix our eyes on sin but to really know whether or not Jesus Christ is the Lord of our life. Is He in us? If He is not in us then we are not saved, we are not Christians!

The Bible tells us in John15:5-6 (NKJV), "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned." It is really important that we know and understand that those who are found abiding in Him are the ones that will go to heaven. Read these two verses again carefully, Jesus was the One, who said all of these, not Harry Lee!

When you are done examining yourselves, do you find that Christ is in you that qualifies you to go to heaven? Paul, the Apostle said, "I trust that you will know that we are not disqualified." Amen!
