When you think about the word ministry. What image comes to your mind?
Jesus washed the feet of His disciples; Jesus fed 5000 men; Jesus cast out demons; Jesus taught His disciples; the disciples preached the good news; the disciples healed the sick...etc. "Ministry is an act of serving". What a wonderful image!
Jesus Himself in Matthew 20:28 said that He came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many. Since we are His followers, we are no different than our Lord and Master - we are redeemed to serve!
The four basic areas of ministry can be seen in Matthew 28:16-20 and Acts 2:42-47 and they are as follows:
- Out-Reach: The Church reaching out to those outside the Church - Evangelism, Missions (Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15; 2 Corinthians 5:20)
- In-Reach: The Church reaching in to those inside the Church - Encouragement, Fellowship (Hebrews 3:13; Hebrews 10:24-25; 2 Timothy 4:2)
- Up-Reach: The Church reaching up by communicating and giving to the Lord God - Prayer, Praising and Worship (Ephesians 5:19-20; Ephesians 6:18; Psalm 33:1)
- Down-Reach: The Lord God reaching down by communicating and giving to the Church - Bible Study, Teaching, Equipping the saints (Matthew 28:20; John 14:26; 2 Timothy 3:14-17)
Ministry is not an obligation rather it is an opportunity because He first served us. With this in mind we invite you to serve Him with us together.
